    Murtis Around Town

    ByElizabeth September 2, 2015

    image

When is garden statuary merely a decorative object and when is it a murti–an object of devotion, a representation of some aspect of the divine?  It may well seem different for the artist, the person who chose its location, and the viewers.

Would you have a different reaction if this angel was on the grounds of a church? What about a temple? A national park? Your workplace? A sculpture museum?

    A Good Week for Sadhana

    ByElizabeth August 31, 2015

This morning, when I was reviewing in my head some of the meetings and other work matters upcoming this week, I thought, “what a good time to practice all the things I have been studying.”

It felt like progress to think that and then notice my first thought was not, “this week is going to be awful,” or even, “this week is going to be challenging,” instead of thinking the latter and reminding myself of the former.

And having a homemade popsicle after a long day certainly helps make this heat wave more enjoyable.

State of the Garden (Rescue Orchids)

    ByElizabeth August 30, 2015

These orchids were left out with the trash in the neighborhood yesterday.  Though my bags were full from a walk to the farmers market, I did not want to leave them to perish when they could yet offer more beauty.

Despite what looked like months of neglect–the plants evidently owned only for their blooming time and not their full growing cycle–there was optimistic new growth.

Time will tell whether they will rebloom.  For now, they look pretty happy to have a new home.
