What’s Up with the Heavens?
I am no astrologer, but I tend to be sensitive to the subtle energies. After having a week of wild shifts, things not functioning, and sequences not behaving in their usual manner, I resorted to asking a question of my friends on Facebook. Is Mercury in retrograde again, I asked, knowing from the general word I hear that it was not. But it felt like that only more so. This generated a whole dialogue. My friends commiserated and a couple educated me and gave me some reading material. I read it, and thought, “yes, that’s what seems to be happening.”
Have you been noticing any especially wild energetic occurrences for you?
Arugula and Green Garlic Pesto
There’s lots of arugula in the garden. Some still new enough to save for salad, some that has bolted in the heat. The cilantro is just about gone with the dry heat. The basil and parsley have gone to flower. As I thought about how best to enjoy all of what was there while simultaneously best tending the garden for optimal growth (much like yoga practice), I remembered that I had seen a farmer with arugula pesto at the Dupont Circle Fresh Farm Market last week. I bought something else from the farmer to honor the idea, fully conscious of my own garden full of arugula calling out to me.
Making pesto was a great way to optimize the bitter tang of the flowers on the older plants. (I left a few of each type of plant to go to seed for a second crop starting in late summer on a volunteer basis). I added enough of the young arugula and some tender parsley and basil leaves, along with the basil flowers, to bring out the arugula taste that would have been hidden by the bitterness in the plants that had flowered if not been combined with other foods. I pureed the chopped greens with olive oil, walnuts, and green garlic. Salt and pepper to taste.
“Compassion Course” (NVC)
Those of you who talk to me more regularly have heard me mention that I’ve been taking a modest on-line course in non-violent communication. The course basically offers mindfulness and communication skills for more compassionate communication with oneself and others. Though much I’d heard before, I found the course well constructed and accessible. I found the weekly emails, even when I did not feel moved to complete the suggested exercises in writing for myself, served as a regular call for mindful speaking and reacting at a time in my work life (and in my life as an engaged citizen) when I can use all the reminders I can get.
I’m repeating the course, which starts in June 2015. For those of you who may be interested, here’s the link: http://compassioncourse.org/
