Alterations
All around town there are dry cleaning emporia that advertise their ability to do alterations. They are not offering complete transformations. Rather, they are offering to take down a hem or to shorten it, to take in the waist or let it out, to mend a tear or broken closure, or to make an article of clothing more up to date. The intention is to make what is altered better fit the current owner and to have it work and look its best. A tailor handed an existing piece of clothing for alteration cannot change the cloth out of which it is made or change the essence of the design.
I think the point of the yoga practices is like bringing a piece of clothing to a tailor to be altered. We cannot change our essential nature or basic form, but with the practices we can fit better in our own skins and make the clothing that is our body show us and others our best and most effective self.

Whispers of Spring
Look very closely on this wintry day, with ice still caking the sidewalks and the news full of the next winter storm, and promises of spring are visible.
I have not seen any bulbs coming up yet, though with the rain and higher temperatures on Wednesday, a few may start to appear in warmer spots.
The buds that set up last fall are starting to color and swell; leaf nodes on early trees are forming. Some of the maples have reddish leaf buds already.
Rescue Plants (Quarantine Companions)
I found a couple of plants shivering on the sidewalk last week. They seem to be recovering nicely. I divided several plants over the holiday period, and repotted others. I find the plants help me stay inside.
Neighborhood Holiday Lights Charity Challenge
How we collectively yearn for the light, though we seek it in different ways! For anyone who can tell me exactly where I took each of these photos, I will give a donation to charity in your name (total for all persons guessing correctly $250). Hint: All photos except the last, which was taken this morning, were taken on the solstice, and I did not go out of my way to take the photos.
