When I was out at lunchtime to run an errand, I crossed paths with the neighbor (or visitor) wearing this shirt. I asked if I could photograph him. He seemed a bit taken aback, but posed for me when I said that I would only photograph the quote. After all, anyone who would walk around Capitol Hill with a Bayard Ruskin quote on his chest would likely want to motivate as many people as possible to think about that quote and act accordingly.
Unexpected Rain (and Opening to Grace)
I thought perhaps that I was still dreaming when I heard the soft patter of early morning rain. It has been so unfortunately dry. There was no rain in the forecast–only impending blistering heat–for days to come. But a cool rain it was indeed, nourishing the garden and giving temporary relied to my soul, anxious about drought.
As I enjoyed the unexpected rain, I thought about the practice of opening to grace. We cannot make it rain, though we might pray or dance for it. We can, though, make the ground and garden ready to receive it, even as we simultaneously plan and prepare to live as mindfully as we can with drought.
When we simultaneously open to the gifts of grace and work in recognition of challenges and limitations, we can experience and offer the most joy and fullness of being for ourselves and others.

A Trend Worth Adopting
When I was a kid, my friend who lived next door and I would use small pieces of slate to draw hopscotch boards and such on the pavement.
In recent years, more and more of my Hill neighbors have been decorating the sidewalks with chalk drawings–mostly done by children.
In south India, many of the thresholds were decorated with beautiful designs made with chalk or colored powder, and I kept thinking how delightful it would be if we engaged in that practice here.
It is on my wish/to do list to get some chalk to draw some welcoming decorations of my own on the sidewalk in front of my house.
