    Svatantriya?

    ByElizabeth October 11, 2012October 11, 2012

In the tantric philosophy, one of the aspects ascribed to the ultimacy of being itself is that it is completely free (svatantriya). Even when elemental being manifests itself as limited in time and space (as humans for example), it is part of the very dance, the play (lila) of existence.

I find it fascinating how much of our advertising uses language that in essence promises that we will realize aspects of our divine nature by owning some material thing or indulging in some activity. What is being sold, by those terms, inevitably fails deliver and must thoroughly disappoint. This thing on offer might be a wonderful technological toy that would be great fun to use, but hardly could bring unlimited freedom. If it did, we wouldn’t want to buy the next version.

    Signs Around Town (Seasonal)

    ByElizabeth October 10, 2012October 10, 2012

As I was noticing the decorations going up around the neighborhood about witches, ghosts, vampires, and ghouls, I found myself reflecting that as in the cultures that brought us Halloween, Indian folk tales are replete with stories of yogis who are practitioners of black magic. Even Patanjali, in his Yoga Sutras, warns that the practices (sadhana) must be for the purpose of uniting with spirit and not for attachment to the idea of developing supernatural powers.

    Signs Around Town

    ByElizabeth October 8, 2012October 8, 2012

Not just rubber surfaces, but muscles, bones, and ligaments. Please don’t wear heels or if you feel you must, then only while sitting, reclining, or attending costume parties. By choosing not to wear high heels, You will stave off not only much pain and suffering, but also potential surgeries and their attendant environmental, social, and personal financial costs.

Householder Yoga (and Getting Out to Vote)

    ByElizabeth October 3, 2012

To be a tantrica does not mean wild and indifferent  sensual indulgence.  On the contrary, it means fully engaging in all of life.  A tantric life is one in which everything one does–work, family, relationship, consumption, citizenship–is steadily and progressively more informed by the teachings of yoga and infused with the fruits of the practices.  A key aspect of participating fully in the life of a householder in a democracy is to educate oneself about politics and to participate.  Please vote.  Here’s a short video from the ACLU that you might want to watch and pass along to your friends and family.
