Signs Around Town (and Things Attributed By Some to the “Divine”)

    ByElizabeth April 4, 2013April 4, 2013

Whether or not one believes in an uber-creator, such belief is no excuse to abdicate one’s own need to be conscious of how individuals are part of the whole fabric of being and our duty (dharma) to act in recognition of that interrelationship. Taking responsibility for our own lives and relationship to others and our place in the ecosystem is an essential part of aligning with the ideal of the divine.

It is reasonable and perfectly appropriate to practice to enhance our own peace, joy, and well-being. Equally important is that the practices lead us to live with more mindfulness and compassion.

Doing the practices without ever refining how we are in the world is not, as some claim, enough to serve as a grand contribution to making the world a better place, though if we are happier and healthier we are likely to be more pleasant to be around.

Gates and Gateways (and Ganesha’s Exhortation)

    ByElizabeth April 2, 2013April 3, 2013

A gate might be an obstacle or it might be a way through or it might be that which is containing something that would otherwise be detrimental to our well-being.  One of the key things that we do with the various yoga practices is explore how an apparent barrier is serving us or how a locked gate might turn our path in a more auspicious direction.

We will learn little and live less fully if we just lament the locked gate and unreasonably expect from the practices the removal of challenges or barriers.  Ganesha–who is often invoked as the remover of obstacles–is less one who just opens all the gates for us than one who empowers us to discover gateways regardless of whether gates are meant to stay locked or whether they seem to block our path.

    Yes, There Were More

    ByElizabeth March 27, 2013

My friend asked me tonight whether I’d gone over to the Supreme Court to see if there were any more heart-shaped clouds during the oral arguments today.  I was occupied mostly by errands on my too brief lunch time walk (work was very busy) and didn’t get all the way over to the Supreme Court, but yes, there were more today when I was within a few blocks of the Court:
