State of the Garden
Beans, okra, cucumber, cherry tomatoes

Thoughts about eating well to feed your body and spirit.
Beans, okra, cucumber, cherry tomatoes

Although, having been raised as a Quaker and continued to practice as such in adulthood, I do not observe most of the Jewish rituals and holidays. This year I was certain that I at least wanted to bake something traditional for Rosh Hashanah, and I felt engaged with wanting some part of ritual observance.
Thus in recognition of RGB leaving this embodiment into that of a tzaddik, I have a honey-glazed, sourdough, apple challah–baked round for the cycle and fullness of the year.

Appreciating the absence of fire and flood and holding in the light those in harm’s way.

Today I harvested herbs to dry (lemon balm, mint, rosemary, thyme, sage). I froze a pint of garlic chive blossoms, made a green jerk sauce, a basil-garlic chive pesto–most went into the freezer, the rest I will eat in the next week or so. I started a mint liqueur and today’s bean harvest, yielded a pint of fresh beans that I put into the freezer. And I started stringing chili peppers to dry. I found it soothing and meditative.

I do not do the poses as an end in themselves. I practice moving my body mindfully so that I can move as best serves my life. Among other things, I like to be sufficiently flexible and secure in my balance to maintain a vertical garden.

How brazenly ecstatic were this trio of cardinals in the garden let me know that the grapes were fully ripe. They are delicious, though the skins are thick and there are seeds. The squash skin appears to have been gnawed at by a squirrel, but I like butternut squash still green.

Started another batch of cucumber pickles.

In the morning, I watered the garden and picked fresh herbs and greens. After work, I made fettuccine and pesto. I talked to two friends (one by phone, the other by Zoom). With both, the conversation was concentrated on what more we can do to actively participate in creating change for ourselves individually and for society as a whole. We had some possible ideas.
