    Murtis Around Town

    image

When is garden statuary merely a decorative object and when is it a murti–an object of devotion, a representation of some aspect of the divine?  It may well seem different for the artist, the person who chose its location, and the viewers.

Would you have a different reaction if this angel was on the grounds of a church? What about a temple? A national park? Your workplace? A sculpture museum?

What a Good Murder Mystery Can Teach Us About Sadhana

Surely that’s what life was all about?  Opening doors and peering through them–perhaps even finding the rose gardens there… (Colin Dexter, The Dead of Jericho)

The good murder mysteries — the ones that teach much about human nature and do not dwell graphically on gore and violence — can teach us much about the power of sadhana (yoga practice).  The best mysteries are ones in which the protagonist teaches us by his or her investigation into the mystery that with careful, steady discipline, the application of well-developed technique and study, consistent effort, and an openness to trust intuition tempered by discrimination, we can reveal to ourselves the truth of the matter.  The truth revealed is not just the identity, means, and motive of the murderer (mystery solved), but the knowledge of the extraordinariness of human being in all of its manifestations, both good and evil.

    Wash Your Hands A Lot

I have not much been one for hand sanitizer, though I have long washed my hands well and frequently and avoided touching directly door knobs and elevator buttons, etc, and appropriate social isolation when I am sick.

In the present moment, it seemed like a nice idea to try and make hand sanitizer at home and then share it. I already had the alcohol for making tinctures and the tea tree oil, but mixing this combination of things all together will be a new thing. I would have done better with aloe vera gel than juice and a good deal less, but this was the smallest size. As long as it’s more than 60%alcohol, it should both sanitize and keep.

The remaining ingredients are meant to add moisturizing and/or antiseptic properties. Both tea tree and lemongrass oil can be irritating, so that will only be a few drops.

    Last Year’s Kale

To make room to plant seeds and seedlings of the cool weather greens, today I pulled most of the kale that overwintered.  I’m not quite sure how it survived even the visitation of the polar vortices, but my garden is its own private mystery.

Uma’s not sure whether the kale is any good, but it is actually neither too bitter, nor too tough to be edible, though it will need to be picked over well and would be best cooked thoroughly.

To go with the kale, keeping in mind the next wintry front coming through, I am soaking chickpeas overnight.  Tomorrow I will braise the kale with wine, garlic, rosemary, and onions, and then stew it together with the chickpeas.  The combination of braising and stewing will make tenderize the kale, but still keep it  flavorful.

With what I planted new today, the next time it is feeling spring-like, there should be some tender new greens to pick and taste.
