Flowers Around Town (Anemone in a Tree Box)
In the presence of the grand, such as the cherry trees in full bloom, it is easy to overlook the small things.
I am entranced by the small garden offerings, the loving care and desire for beauty manifested by the plantings of perhaps even a flower or two when all someone has is a couple of square feet of sidewalk space to plant.
So too with our human gifts. How essential to happiness and connection it is to recognize the gifts and contributions to love and community by those who are not extraordinary, not the powerful or the famous.

They’re Almost Here (Way Too Soon)
The cherry trees are starting to flower–two weeks earlier than an average spring and likely to set a record.
In my own yard, the greens that over-wintered and are newly coming up are suffering from lack of rain and May/June temperatures. Though it is still technically winter, the lowest lows are in the high 40s F in the 15-day forecast. It is still risky to take out the tropicals, though if the 15-day forecast looks the same in mid-April, I will go for it, even though historical last frost is in May.
What cannot wait is planting cool weather vegetables such as snow peas. They still might not thrive if the unseasonable warmth and lack of rain do not level off. But Spring is so early that now is the chance to catch the growing season.
As I can go to the grocery store and the farmers’ market, I could just let the season pass me by, ignoring the realities of the season we are getting.
Much of the reason I garden is to heighten consciousness and connection to nature. If I do not make sudden adjustments the way a farmer would to, then I am missing out on a great opportunity. That meeting the unexpected time constraints imposed by abnormal weather patterns is not in sync with my schedule just highlights the importance of us needing to shift ourselves to be aligned with the great flows of energy.
Enjoy your gardens (strawberries will be early too–i already have some plants starting to form fruit).

Sculptures Around Town (and Overdoing the Quest for Youth)
Every time I walk past this sculpture, I wonder whose idea it was to repaint it. For a long time it the gilding was chipped and faded. For me it had much more charm showing its age.
So too, I think, with humans. It is great to feel and look youthful naturally because of proper care of health, and quite another to disfigure ourselves and our looks with surgery and treatment seeking always to look like we have not fully lived out some life.
By all means, seek to remain vibrant and supple, but do please also honor the signs of experience.

Being Present in the Present
Much is made by Westerners of the exhortation in Eastern practice to be in the present moment, but it often is used as justification for a feckless disregard for others, for our history, and for our own power to change and grow.
Being fully in the moment at all times (easier said than done) by virtue of the fullness of presence itself, leaves no room for belaboring the past or being anxious about what might not come to pass, which is wonderful indeed.
To be truly present, though, to live in the “now” is an artful dance. It requires being fully in the moment, while simultaneously honoring and learning from the past and taking responsibility for the future. It is thus that we live best–both recognizing ourselves as beings in the fabric of space and time, yet simultaneously experiencing the universal joy unbound by the limitations of space and time. This is, I think, the ultimate point of the practices.
