Questions Around Town

A friend of mine who is an avid and wonderful knitter decided to make a shawl for a friend who is about to have surgery. Instead of whipping out a shawl herself in a few days, she invited other friends to knit squares and bring them to her. She is going to piece together the squares to create, in essence, a physical manifestation of a gentle, loving, communal embrace.
I loved this idea. Though I could not put name to face for the friend who is suffering (I think I would likely recognize her), to support my friend who is setting such a strong intention of sending healing, I am knitting a square or two with some beautiful handspun yarn leftover from a sweater several years ago.
As I knit, I am setting an intention to infuse the cloth with healing energy. In having been invited to participate in this project, I have been given the gift of a potent reminder of how strongly our attitude and intention in whatever we create and offer can shift how it goes forth into the world — whether it be gifts, practice, speech, food, work.
I’ve been told that the tantric yoga masters said everything is the emanating light of consciousness with a capital “C” (prakasha) and through certain esoteric practices we can come to know ourselves as reflecting back on (vimarsha) this exquisite light. Then we can experience the sublimity of oneness.
Intentional stillness makes reflections easier to witness. And so we sit. And we can reorient our whole view of the world and recognize the emanating light reflected in the play of patterns from our individual and relational embodied dances. And sometimes a trio of dogs and a pond just make a great opportunity for a photo essay.
Yesterday, I took the plunge and joined Facebook. I’d read one too many articles in the New York Times about it without being able to really understand what I was reading. What an interesting phenomenon — seeing images and reading words of friends and acquaintances through space (friends around the world) and time (friends from way back).
Tomorrow, I will be speaking on a webcast to more than a 1,000 people.
I’ve gotten thousands of hits on this blog.
This is a lot of shared energy without knowing most of those with whom one I am sharing. It is shifting space and time as I think about it. In the computer world, we say or write about what we are thinking as we type or speak into the computer, and then our words and energies shift and take on their own power as they extend out instantly to anyone who chooses — intentionally or randomly — to receive them.
I think the more we are in the ethereal world, the more we need simultaneously to make certain we are grounded.

I am not prepared to go on hunger strike—it would not be right for my health. I can bear witness, speak out, and donate. What might you be able to do?
