Since arriving in Santa Fe late this afternoon, I’ve encountered many of the Hindu pantheon, almost more prevalent than who is indigenous or long settled here, but that’s probably just due to the first places I walked. Fitting perhaps since I’m mostly on this trip to bathe in the yoga practices.
Found Exhortation (India Style)
Only after walking along the two lane streets in a sari and sandals, sharing the road with exhaust-fume spewing buses, three-wheelers, motorcycles, mopeds, bicycles, cows, goats, dogs, street vendors, and pedestrians amidst dust, puddles, sewage, potholes, cowpats, dog shit, goat turds, and piles of organic and non-biodegradable trash, could one understand how a campaign to end the practice of littering would link it to evil. Thanks to my fellow traveler Eric for pointing out this sign.
What Do You Think It Means?
Can you imagine looking at this photograph without ascribing to the image what you know of red and white stripes coupled with stars on a blue background and of a circle divided by lines in this particular pattern?
How much differently would an Indian Hindu look at a painting of an elephant than would an American voter in the weeks leading up to a Presidential election?
If you don’t know all the meanings carried by an icon, what message do you get from a picture of such icon? If you think it is anything other than a pretty picture, but think a meaning that is not its iconography are you just suffering from deluded ignorance?
Is knowledge binding (jnanam bandaha) or does it liberate?

Remembrance and Recognition
On this anniversary of my Grandmother Rose’s leaving her body and her daughter, my mother, entering hers, on this Armistice day though none in my lineage were warriors, I made in remembrance and recognition of my ancestors, this mala with a locket (still empty of pictures) that my grandmother bought at the Brooklyn Museum’s shop in the early 1970s–

How to Be in the Moment Right Here Right Now
As I walk from my airbnb to the location of a weekend yoga teacher intensive, I am given reminder that “spiritual practice” is a luxury that comes only when we have adequate nourishment and shelter.
