Ways to Eat Day Old Bread (Is that “fresh” food?)

Ayurveda says one should only eat “fresh” food.  What does that mean?  How does that translate into having delicious food making the best use of every bit of it without waste and without having all of our time being devoted to creating it (from start to finish).  Is making a fresh dish from a food item from yesterday’s meal “stale” food?  I don’t think so, but then, I am not an ayurvedic practitioner.  I am fairly certain it is less “stale” than “fast” or packaged food.  And I am too much the New York grandchild of peasant immigrants to forego making the most optimal and complete use of all the food that enters my kitchen.  Also, the simple efficiency of leftovers are too important a component of having the most personally and lovingly prepared food I can with my life style.

Here are some of my favorite ways to eat bread the day after it was a fresh accompaniment to a salad, sandwich, or larger, festive meal.  (Obviously, this is not for all of those who cannot or do not like to eat bread, which I think of as indeed the staff of life.)   Here are some of my favorites, not in any particular order:

Crostini/Bruschetta (topped with tapenade, salsa, chopped tomatoes and cucumbers, etc.)

Bread salad (with the best of the summer tomatoes and fresh basil)

Croutons (for salad or soup, my favorite is rubbed with a little garlic)

Red pepper spread with pomegranate molasses and walnuts (bread is the thickener)

Skordalia (also can be made with potatoes or a mix of bread and potatoes)

    Stuffing for squash

Bread crumbs for a whole variety of things

    Savory bread pudding

What My New Smart Phone Is Teaching Me About Yoga

I spent nearly three hours talking with tech support just to get the phone authorized.  And once that was accomplished, the guy helping me also was unable to figure out how to transfer my contacts from the old phone to the new.  Last night, on the second full day, I opened every item in settings just to learn about this piece of technology and found another way to transfer contacts than tech support had tried.  Hooray!  I didn’t have to enter them manually one by one.

So it’s like this:  no matter how brilliant a system, if I didnt learn how to use it, I wasn’t going to get any benefits.  The more I studied and practiced, the more I would be able to use it in a way that enhanced my daily life.  Although a teacher is necessary, it takes our own thorough, steady, and attentive practice to empower ourselves and expand our limits.

I had thoroughly resigned myself to typing.  Now I will have more time to figure out how to resize photos.  That may feel less urgent.  It’s busy at work, and the garden, yoga mat, meditation cushion, library, and beautiful weather call me to them.

Spam, Praise, Criticism, and the Pairs of Opposites

The yoga teachings say that we need to be unattached to the pairs of opposites–pleasure (sukha) and pain (dukha).  When all of our motivations come from seeking pleasure and avoiding pain, we suffer.  Even the tantric yogis, who invite us to fully engage in the vast array of experience that is being human, say we need to  turn to the auspicious and recognize the divine play in all experience and not get entangled in thinking what we desire is all that is.

Today’s spam is a nice illustration of why taking any praise or criticism as a reflection of how one should feel about one’s creative output is a recipe for suffering:
