Garlic Mosquito Repellant
I’d heard that concentrated garlic spray worked to keep mosquitoes out of the yard. I admit that I was skeptical. I’m one of those people who will get a mosquito bite on the 5th floor of a building with windows that don’t open. My little garden is unbearable come June, and I dress to weed and water as if I were trekking in the Amazon. I’ve tried various dunks and pellets (the ok for an organic garden kind) to no avail. This year I finally got my act together and ordered garlic spray for the yard.
I am hoping if I spray every 3-4 weeks I will be able to garden in peace (from mosquitoes at least), but I won’t be able to report until later in the summer. I can tell you that while I was out doing the initial spraying, which raised clouds of mosquitoes, I did not get a single bite. Then, when I was out (albeit rather briefly because of the heat) this morning, I similarly was left bite-free though I was not covered up. It may be stinky, but I’m prepared to give a high five for concentrated garlic instead of DEET (not that I have ever sprayed DEET on my garden) or chronically being covered with angry, itchy welts.
In Honor of Tzaddik RGB
Although, having been raised as a Quaker and continued to practice as such in adulthood, I do not observe most of the Jewish rituals and holidays. This year I was certain that I at least wanted to bake something traditional for Rosh Hashanah, and I felt engaged with wanting some part of ritual observance.
Thus in recognition of RGB leaving this embodiment into that of a tzaddik, I have a honey-glazed, sourdough, apple challah–baked round for the cycle and fullness of the year.

Early Morning Rain
This morning I stayed in bed after the alarm sounded and listened to the rain. It was peaceful and pleasant, but it was not meditation.
Listening to the rain made me extra glad to have spent so much of the weekend in the garden. The new plants are drinking up the fresh water and will almost soar when the warm sun returns at the end of the week.
Thinking about how the garden will flourish because I laid the ground to enable it to get the best of the rain and the sun inspired me to get up and take my meditation seat, even though I was late. It is practicing consistently that lays the ground for us to be ready to have the fullest, most joyous, and most optimal experience of ourselves, the world, and our spirit whatever comes and whenever it comes.
