Moon and Holiday Lights
As I was leaving a holiday gathering tonight, my host saw me standing on the front stoop pointing the Blackberry at a somewhat awkward side angle. “What are you taking a picture of?” he asked. “The moon and the lights,” I replied, wishing that I could get the composition more balanced, but the row of houses was in the way.
I did not say, “I am taking a photo of the human yearning for light, for beauty, for control of the environment, shown in tandem with the glory of the moon,” but I am sure that once I showed him the photo, my host knew what I had not put into words.

Summer Early Evening
There always seem to be heart shapes when I am walking over to William Penn House to lead the Tuesday night yoga practice. In the winter it is dark walking to practice. In the summer it is still light walking home. This evening I noticed how much earlier dusk is now coming than it did at the solstice.

Signs Around Town
A friend emailed me today that her children will be home for rest of the week because their schools lost power from Sandy, and that she is counting her blessings because she and her family came through fine. My parents, who lost trees, including one that went through the roof of their house, are counting themselves well off because they witnessed how bad it could have been. In contrast, some others I know who didn’t experience any real inconvenience to themselves personally though in danger range have said they thought the storm had been “over-hyped.” (I know, being exposed to silly statements such as the latter is a peril of social media).
Do we need to know hardship ourselves, at least a little, in order to have true sensitivity and compassion? Possibly.
To all my friends and family challenged in the wake of Sandy or going through another challenge or hardship, please know that you are in my thoughts.
