Winter Weather Advisory (Web Copy of News Mailing)

Dear Friends,

As I sit inside writing, listening to music, and preparing for a long afternoon yoga practice, I am filled both with gratitude for protection for the elements and an unflagging ability to amuse myself and complete awe at the power of nature.

I don’t usually feel the need to post anything about the possibility of weather cancellations.  If I can walk to class, there is class.  Depending on when the snow gets here tomorrow, the amount, how long it continues, and just how high the winds will be, could make winter cancellation possible.

I will decide late afternoon tomorrow.  Keep an eye out on Facebook, the website, and your email box for updates.  In the meantime, enjoy your home, the company of yourself and others living with or around you, and the beauty.

Peace and light,

Elizabeth

    New Page About Books

It should come as no surprise to those who have taken my classes or have been reading this blog with some regularity, that an incredibly important source of inspiration is my library.  At the suggestion of my fabulous web designer, who is currently in graduate school for library sciences, I have gone live with a  library page. Given the nature of a blog; everything I have read is really part of its bibliography; this is the much edited version.  I am using Library Thing, which is a fascinating space for book nerds in the electronic universe.  I hope that you will enjoy this opportunity to expand the dialogue about books in our lives, our studies, and our practices.

Accidental Down Time and Opportunity for Reimagining

I hope this finds you safe and healthy and my energy out to those of you in the midst of challenges of embodiment of whatever kind.

I had not meant to take as long as I did between posts. Much gratitude to the wonderful person who administers the site for a quick repair in a very busy time.

The need for a fix naturally leads to the question of whether to fix or change and how. It is time for a change. Keep your eye out for updates and have patience with progress.

I hope to have more time to write than about practicing the various aspects of yoga. I have been practicing much and am delving back into the philosophy from today’s perspective. Please let me know if you would be interested in particular topics. And if you want to see more photos, I’m on Facebook as myself and Rose Garden Yoga and on Instagram as rosegardenyoga1008.

September News (web copy of newsletter)

News from Rose Garden Yoga With Anusara (R) Yoga Instructor Elizabeth Goodman

    Dear Friends,

A cool breeze is blowing through my window as I write, giving a foretaste of glorious fall weather to come.

Although already fully immersed in the throes of work after last week’s study trip to Oregon with John Friend, I am brimming from the teachings and comraderie.  Such a trip reminds me of how crucial it is to study and connect to help bring the benefits of yoga off the mat and into my daily life.

This week is free class week at Willow Street Yoga.  It is a great way to try out new classes or teachers or to bring  friend who is been shy about starting or returning to yoga.  I’ll be teaching both my 8:30am Level II and my noon Gentle and Therapeutics classes this Saturday, September 12th.  Bring a friend and come check it out.

Looking for an extra class or one great to bring a drop in friend?  Come join us for the Tuesday night class at William Penn House.  All levels of practitioners welcome.  Special prices for public interest workers, students, and seniors.

Wednesday night advanced/intermediate group practice proceeds are still 100% for charity.  This month’s cause is “Yoga Salutes Non-violence” a yoga sun-salute practice that raises money for local domestic violence shelters.  For more information, check out my friend Cheryl’s website at: http://www.heartofgraceyoga.com/YSNV.php

Upcoming Workshops:  Next Saturday, September 19th is the next Serenity Saturday at Capitol Hill Yoga.  Get ready for the shift into Fall with a sweet afternoon of deep relaxation and nurture.  Can’t make it this month?  Put October 17th and November 21st into your calendar for a great way to ease through Fall.  To register, please go to:  www.capitolhillyoga.com

Looking Ahead:  Already trying to make your Thanksgiving plans?  If you will be in town, plan to share your gratitude at the 7th Annual Thanksgiving Day fundraiser for Oxfam, which I will be leading at the Willow Street Yoga Center’s Takoma Park studio.

For more information on classes and workshops or to enjoy the blog, visit:  www.rosegardenyoga.com or join me on facebook.

    Peace and light,

    Elizabeth

  • Blizzard Conditions Cancel Serenity Saturday Workshop

Why did it even take me this long to decide?  I think sometimes that by today’s standards, I am too cautious and not enough “fun.”  Going out in a foot of snow is not my idea of fun, but I was OK with giving it a try and finding it fun.  As the snow continues to fall thickly, my innate cautiousness won out.  What will it be like at 5pm when it is forecast to be even stormier, perhaps even with white out conditions?  Not a time when I would be encouraging others to venture out.  Enjoy being snowed in.  Take some time for yoga.  I’ll be spending a couple of hours this afternoon doing forward bends and inversions.

    Curiouser and Curiouser…

Last night, I took some lovely photos in the rain when I was walking to get a massage (it is pretty awesome to get a massage on a Monday night; try it sometime and see how it changes your perspective on the work week). After I came home and had dinner, I resisted the temptation to curl up on the sofa with a book. Instead, I got on the computer to take care of email correspondence that had accumulated over the day and the weekend while I was at the workshop with John Friend. I uploaded the photos from my walk and tried to post an entry. I got a message when I was in WordPress saying that the photo upload had failed. I exited from that screen and tried to access the file uploader. I could not get in. I then exited the prompt that I had failed. It would not let me cancel. Next, I exited the admin portion of my blog. The computer was not happy about that, but eventually it seemed to close the program. After that, I could not get back either to my public page nor to the admin page. I tried several times, but to no avail. I sent an email to my website designer–could she get in?

I woke to an email from my website designer saying no problems for her. After I did my morning practice and before heading into the office, I tried again. On my home computer, no access at all to either the public or administrative portions of the site. I reloaded Firefox. That did not do the trick. I scanned my computer, but it showed no errors. I have access to the blog from my Blackberry, my office computer, and my IPad, but not from my home computer–my central place, the place where all my files and photos and bookmarks and maximum computer capabilities are one.

As Alice (in Wonderland) would say, “curiouser and curiouser.” I am sure with research and trying lots of alternatives, we will find a solution to this peculiar glitch.

I think staying fully connected to the ultimate loving ground of our being can feel like this strange denial of access to my blog. We get glimpses. We have studied enough to know what it is on an intellectual basis. We feel connected when we are at a big workshop (or sometimes it looks like every one else has found the bliss and we are the only ones who are not tapping in–note to self, usually that’s not true) or are in class or practicing, but not when we get challenged by daily life.

Two things serve to bring us back to center–the first is to keep practicing and making the effort, just as expanding knowledge and trying different strategies will get me back my full blog access; the second is grace (and being open to receive it). And when grace comes, we then need to keep practicing so that we stay connected and can live in and from grace more and more of the time and remember and reconnect more easily when we get disconnected.

Peace and light, E — Posted with WordPress for BlackBerry.

    Another Opportunity to Practice Yoga

Another opportunity. Another opportunity to soften, another opportunity to open to what is possible within limits as I attempt to work with yet another interface for the same blog. If the machines did not tell you, would you be able to tell the difference between an entry done on the laptop, the Blackberry, or the IPad? I have the most functionality on the laptop. The Blackberry and IPad apps are both missing key functions. As I start learning the IPad, I try to stay with a sense of openness and wonder at what technology offers instead of getting frustrated by learning curves and limitations. It’s yet another opportunity to practice yoga off the mat!
