We had fun watching it get snowier and snowier between my two Willow Street classes (delightful how many came despite the weather), but it sure was cold on the way home.
Hellebore blooms early, but January is awfully early.
I have been deeply touched by how so many have been inquiring of themselves how we can best respond from the light to the tragedy in Arizona. I received an email from Common Cause today with this beautiful quote from Martin Luther King, Jr.:
“When evil men (and women) plot,
good men (and women) plan.
When evil men (and women) burn and bomb,
good men (and women) must build and bind.
When evil men (and women) shout ugly words of hatred,
good men (and women) commit themselves to the glories of love.

As it is every year, the Azalea Walk at the National Arboretum fills me with joy and wonder. “Was it really this splendid last year?” one of my companions asked. “I go every year,” she said, “but I forget how gorgeous it is!” She comes back each year to remember the beauty and the awe. So, too, it can be with our practice. We stop going to class or practicing our meditation or asana for a while because we get too busy. Then we come back, and we ask ourselves how we could have forgotten the joy and beauty a steady practice brings us, and we are inspired to commit again.
