I witnessed this family standing on the train platform while I was listening to a teleseminar from Paul Muller-Ortega on the “four stages of the word.” That a family dressed this way was waiting for the train gave rise to much thought for me about how I seek to integrate yoga practice into my daily life in a modern Western culture. How much is compromise or disservice to the “purity” of the teachings and how much of it is a part of a pulsing, growing, changing intersection of peoples and times?

Bi-Locating
The texts speak of the siddhis–beings with great powers from the steady dedicated fire (tapas) of practice (sadhana).
One of these powers is bi-location — that of being able to be in two places at once. A friend and fellow practitioner once said to me that I shouldn’t want to be able to bi-locate. What that is called, she said, is schizophrenia.
The resting in two places at once that I think we do want, is always to be able to rest in the vast, peace-filled, and gracious space of meditation while we are fully going about the daily business of living.

A Thanksgiving Gathering
A friend, who is on the board of directors, invited me to help set up and serve Thanksgiving dinner at the Latin American Youth Center. I took this afternoon off instead of tomorrow afternoon and helped out. I met several inspiring people and many kids who like cookies.
There’s a lot of art on the walls and some poetry. This reminded me of how grateful I am for what I have and where I am in life.
